You all must have seen the suspense thriller film Darr. In which Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) becomes so madly in love with Kiran (Juhi Chawla) that he wants to achieve her by any means. Kiran keeps running away, but he does not give up chasing her, keeps searching for her for years. Scares. Even tries to murder him. You must have heard many such incidents even in ordinary life, in which boys chase girls. But on Valentine’s Day, a person has made a surprising revelation. Told that his girlfriend kept stalking him for 10 years. Out of fear he left the city, but the girl reached there too. Even a detective was deployed to find him. The situation became so bad that at one point it even came to the point of suicide.
Irish filmmaker Jarlath Rice shared his story for the new Virgin Media One documentary. Said, in 2002 I met a woman named Leena Tantash. She left a note at my house and wrote that I want to have dinner with you. I thought it was a cute and fun way to meet someone for the first time. I said yes. Then we met a cafe. At that time I did not see any madness in Tantash. But as time passed, his actions started disturbing. I got so fed up that I told her – we don’t want to meet anymore. Despite this, Tantash was not ready to leave. He made a note and gave it that he would have to stay with her for at least three days a week. You will have to talk to him on phone for at least 15 minutes every evening. Also you will have to behave well with him. She threatened that if she did not do so, she would commit suicide.
Despite refusing, she kept calling
Despite my refusal, she continued calling. Kept sending messages and emails. I kept changing my number again and again, but every time she managed to get the number. Sometimes she would contact my family and get their number and sometimes she would get the number from friends. He even sent a spy after me. I called the police several times but got no response. The limit reached when in April 2014, when I was leaving the house with my second girlfriend, he attacked me. Some sharp object was stuck in my stomach. I turned to blood. I thought she was going to kill.
So scared that he moved from Dublin to Brighton
Rice said, I was so scared that I moved from Dublin to Brighton (East Sussex). Started working as a college tutor there. But Tantash did not leave him there either. A woman named Miss Boland worked with me, she thought she was my girlfriend. Tantash started calling him also. Started threatening. Their life also became difficult. He was devastated by the abusive calls. Later, being upset, he approached the court.
What decision did the court finally give?
After the tough stance of the court, Tantash was finally arrested. The court convicted him and sentenced him to 4 years in jail. However, Tantash said in court, Rice’s refusal had pushed me into deep depression. I come from an upper middle class family but am suffering from mental condition. I need some time to deal with this problem. Miss Boland said, it was a strange and terrible experience when someone harasses you psychologically like this. It was a terrible feeling.
